2000-08: Contributions to Foreign Organizations

Whereas it has been the practice of the NFB:AE for a long time to send one dollar from the membership dues of all its members to the office of the National Federation of the Blind in the US. And

Whereas this practice was initiated to recognize the philosophical link between the two organizations and to permit the members of the NFB:AE to be automatic members of the NFB in the US and

Whereas there is so much work to be done in improving the economic and social status of blind Canadians that every dollar of revenue the NFB:AE receives must be spent with the utmost prudence and

Whereas there are blind Canadians, while uncomfortable with the views and practices of the NFB in the U.S. would like to become involved in our organization and

Whereas there is so much work to be done in improving the economic and social status of blind Canadians that this organization cannot afford to deny itself the contributions of any interested parties,

Therefore be it resolved by the membership of the NFB:AE That

  1. It is the policy of the NFB:AE to donate money to foreign organizations only:
    1. The NFB:AE has joined or hopes to join the organization in question as an organizational member
    2. the membership by resolution determines that a donation is appropriate or
    3. the board determines that an exceptional circumstance exists making the donation necessary or useful to further the NFB:AE's goals.
  2. While the NFB:AE will make any information in it's possession produced by any foreign organization of the blind available in whatever format it possesses, it will not oblige its members to hold memberships in any such organization
  3. The NFB:AE acknowledges the good work of the NFB in the U.S. and while there were strong philosophical links between the NFB:AE and the NFB in the US in the past, and where some similarities between the organizations still do exist and that the NFB:AE resolves to maintain amicable relations with that organization.
