2002-06: Opposition to Legalization of Optician Sight Testing

WHEREAS Proper diagnosis of vision loss is crucial to individuals as the population ages and,

WHEREAS Opticians are performing eye sight refraction testing using Software called Eye Logic and,

WHEREAS this type of testing does not allow for the investigations necessary to look at other medical conditions that may cause vision loss and,

WHEREAS Opticians cannot legally issue prescriptions without a medical assessment, and

WHEREAS Optician sight testing is done for free with the purchase of prescription glasses, and

WHEREAS In British Columbia and Alberta, some medical doctors are violating the Canada Health Act by signing forms sent to them from Opticians performing sight testing

BE IT RESOLVED BY The National Federation of the Blind: Advocates for Equality THAT we oppose any efforts to legalize Optician sight testing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the NFB:AE call on all levels of government to include regular eye exams as an insured service under provincial medical plans.
