An Eye on the North

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians produces a half-hour-a-month radio show for ACB Radio. We welcome any comments and suggestions on topics to be covered and ways to improve the show.   • Episode 7 (April 2009): On this month's episode, An Eye on the North examines the question of segregation versus integration for blind students. Our guest host, John Southern, interviews three Ottawa residents, Krista Kowalchuk, Shelley Ann Morris, and Susan Forster, on their diverse educational experiences growing up in Ontario.

  • Episode 6 (March 2009): On this month's episode of An Eye on the North, our host, Albert Ruel, interviews Toronto lawyer and advocate, David Lepofsky. David and Albert discuss a variety of topics, including the Ontarians with Disabilities Act and David's legal victories against the Toronto Transit Commission.

  • Episode 5 (February 2009): In honour of the 200th anniversary of Louis Braille's birth, this month's episode is dedicated to a discussion of braille. First up, Albert Ruel talks to Debbie Gillespie, manager of braille publishing at the CNIB. In the second half of the show, Albert is joined by John Rae, First Vice President of the AEBC.

  • Episode 4 (January 2009): This month, we are talking about television and telecommunications regulation in Canada. First up, the host of An Eye on the North, talks to Chris Stark, long time activist, about some of the important CRTC decisions affecting blind, deaf-blind, and partially-sighted canadians. Following that, Albert speaks to Marc Workman, AEBC National Secretary, about the CRTC's November public hearing examining the accessibility of telecommunications and broadcasting services for persons with disabilities.

  • Episode 3 (December 2008): In this month's episode, we are talking about blindness in the arts. During the first half of the show, the host of An Eye on the North, Albert Ruel, talks to Kim Kilpatrick of Ottawa about her love of storytelling. Afterwards, Albert speaks with actor, writer, director, producer, and all around man about town, Kelly MacDonald about his involvement in theatre. Be sure to listen as well for another rant from Helen McFadyen.

  • Episode 2 (November 2008): In this month's episode, we are talking planes, trains, and automobiles. During the first half of the show, the host of An Eye on the North, Albert Ruel, speaks with AEBC member Janet Hunt about the quiet car issue. Afterwards, Albert speaks with AEBC President, Robin East, about a number of recent human rights cases affecting blind and disabled travellers. Be sure to listen as well for Helen McFadyen's insightful and very funny commentary on the strange questions blind people are constantly being asked.

  • Episode 1 (Octber 2008): On our premier show, you will be introduced to the AEBC, its history, its successes, and its evolution. The host of An Eye on the North, Albert Ruel, speaks with former presidents, Richard Marion and John Rae, and with current AEBC president, Robin East. Tune in to learn more about the AEBC and the blind consumer movement in Canada.
