Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians

What is the AEBC?

We are a not-for profit consumer organization of blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted adults, their families and other interested individuals who joined together to enhance and further the rights of blind, deaf-blind and partially sighted Canadians. We are a registered charitable organization, registration number 89564 8335 RR0001.

Founded in 1992 as the National Federation of the Blind: Advocates for Equality (NFB:AE), the AEBC is a uniquely Canadian organization that sprang from a desire for equality and empowerment of blind people in Canadian society. We know that misconceptions about the abilities of people who are blind-and not blindness itself-are the primary obstacles facing blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted Canadians.

Controlled by its members, the AEBC, through its active board of directors, works hard to reflect the beliefs and share the goals of blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted Canadians.

More detailed information is available at www.blindcanadians.ca.

What Does the AEBC Do?

We are proud to be involved in issues affecting blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted Canadians and to advocate advancement in employment opportunities, access to technology, printed information and household products, and equality of opportunities. Some of the programs and services that we offer include:

  • Information services for blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted individuals. Losing one's sight affects people in different ways. The AEBC is able to provide practical and emotional help that, when offered by peers who share common experiences, can prove invaluable.
  • Local chapters provide a vehicle for comradery, personal support and action on local issues.
  • "The Canadian Blind Monitor" is a national magazine that spotlights issues, concerns and achievements of persons who are blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted. The magazine is available in Braille, audiocassette, print, email and diskette formats and is available free as part of our public awareness program.
  • Scholarship Program - awarded annually to outstanding students who are blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted.
  • Mentorship Program links newly blind adults, youth and children with experienced blind role models. Mentors act as a source of support, information, encouragement and inspiration and can assist with the transition to an independent and active life with vision loss.
  • www.blindcanadians.ca  is an accessible web site containing up-to-date information about the organization, including our chapters, government activities and submissions.
  • The AEBC list serve links blind, deaf-blind or partially sighted Canadians from coast to coast and even around the world, providing an opportunity to communicate and participate in issue oriented discussions and information sharing.
