Why Barrier Free Canada? Montreal presentation on the introduction of national disability legislation - February 1, 2016

Date: Monday, February 1, 2016
Location: MAB-MacKay Rehabilitation Centre (Layton Hall), 7010 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal, QC
Time: 6pm

Donna Jodhan will present to the Montreal chapter: Why Barrier Free Canada - Canada sans Barrières?

In my presentation I am going to introduce members to Barrier Free Canada - Canada sans Barrières: the birth of BFC - CSB - why, how, and when!

Present environment

At the present time, there is no national legislation that protects, recognizes, and legitimizes the rights of Canadians with disabilities.

True it is that these rights are entrenched in the Charter of Rights but; there is no hard core legislation that penalizes federally governed agencies and companies whenever our rights are infringed upon.

Several provinces have their own versions of this type of legislation.

Our objective

To lobby for a Canadians with disabilities Act and to have enacted no later than July 01 2017; Canada's 150th birthday. We will work with principles borrowed from those of other provinces and combine them to develop our own set of principles. It is not our intention to rewrite any of the principles already in existence in other provinces.

Support garnered to date

  • 5 founding organizations
