Toronto Chapter Walk-a-thon - Wednesday, June 20th, 2018

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians, Toronto Chapter is joining a Walk-a-thon to raise funds in support of our chapter advocacy activities.

This is a “Walk-what-you-can” event, so anyone of any ability can participate. You can secure pledges for any amount, for any distance up to 5km.

Collected pledges can be turned in at the start of the Walk-a-thon. Any outstanding pledges will be collected by email by June 30th, 2018.

Remember, all of our chapter activities depend on the support we receive from donations, and this Walk-a-thon is our major fund-raising event of the year. Every donation matters.

AEBC Toronto is a volunteer-run, local chapter of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians, a national advocacy organization of blind and partially-sighted Canadians, and a registered Charity. Our mission is to advocate for equal access and opportunities in society for blind, partially sighted and deafblind Canadians. The Toronto Chapter has identified employment as our priority, and has participated in local and provincial consultation meetings related to elections, transportation, housing, ODSP, public facility and space access.

So please ask your friends, your family, your neighbours and associates to support the advocacy efforts of those living with vision loss in Toronto.

Where will we walk?

We will be walking along the Beaches Boardwalk, a linear trail composed of wooden planks along the shore of Lake Ontario. The start point for the walk will be Woodbine Beach Picnic Area #1, the picnic pavilion right next to the Ashbriddges Bay Loop, the last stop on the Woodbine 92 south bus route, south of Queen Street East, at the south-east corner of Northern Dancer Blvd and Lakeshore.

How to get there

  • Take the 92 Woodbine bus south from Woodbine station to the last stop on the route at the Ashbridges Bay Loop; about a 13-minute bus ride.
  • Wheel-Trans users, book your trip using 1681 Lakeshore Blvd east, landmark code ‘ASH-P’, as your destination. You will be dropped off in front of the Carter’s Landing Restaurant/Tim Horton’s/Athens Patisserie, on the west side of Northern Dancer south of Lakeshore, and just across the road from the bus loop and the picnic pavilion.

Questions? Call TTC: 416-393-4636 or Wheel-Trans Customer Service at 416-393-4111.

Start Time

We will gather at the start point, the picnic pavilion, at 10:00am and the walk will begin at 10:30am.

Our Route

The walk will be a maximum of 5km, and you are encouraged to walk whatever distance you can. The route will commence at the start point: the picnic pavilion near the Ashbridges Bay Loop, we’ll turn right and walk west to the west end of the Boardwalk. Then we’ll turn around and walk east, all the way to the east end, and then we’ll return to our original starting point.

Please note: We will be walking rain or shine. It is a good idea to bring a water bottle, wear sturdy shoes, and take sunscreen and a hat if the weather is sunny.

Join us after the Walk for a BBQ!!

Under the covered picnic area, we’ll celebrate our success with a BBQ - complimentary burgers and hot dogs, with all the fixings! Vegetarian and gluten-free options available. Free soft drinks and bottled water will be available, too! Whether you are walking or not, come out to the BBQ and cheer on your friends!

Pledge forms are available electronically from our Chapter Secretary, via email. Just call the voice mail line (647-947-9022) or send us an email and we will send you additional copies of the pledge form.
