The alliance for equality of blind Canadians is a National grassroots Organization promoting inclusion and accessibility for all blind, deafblind and partially sighted Canadians. All of us have the right to participate fully in society as we go about our everyday lives. Over the past 27 years, AEBC and its members have accomplished a great deal through public education, peer support, training opportunities and public awareness activities.

How can you help during the Giving Tuesday campaign?
On November 27, and every Tuesday until the end of December, we are counting on your generous donations so we can achieve our goal of raising enough funds to begin the project of rebuilding and upgrading our website. We need to ensure we find a company with the specialized skills required to design a fully accessible website which will meet the unique needs of blind, deafblind and partially sighted Canadians, and it appears we will need at least $20,000 to accomplish this task. Our website must be accessible to people who use screen-reading and screen-magnifying programs, and designing such a site is not as easy a task as one might think.

It is important for our supporters to understand that we can achieve our goals only if we are given the opportunity to overcome the barriers we encounter. Much like all of you, we wish to participate equally in every aspect of Society as it pertains to day-to-day living. Think of what it would be like if you were denied the opportunity to use the Internet to its full capacity; it is a major vehicle utilized and heavily depended upon to conduct business, play games, find a recipe or simply read the newspaper. We are proposing to make certain our website is fully accessible to any individuals who may need additional accommodations as we want them to experience the same quality of services enjoyed by the rest of society.

As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of our donors to provide funds to assist with our day to day operations. Since the launch of our existing website, we have not had the opportunity to make necessary changes needed to upgrade it, due to financial restrictions. Unfortunately, we cannot wait any longer as our website has outlived its usefulness.

Although you may have very different communication tools, please consider that for us, our website is the most important vehicle to share information between our membership, supporters, potential partners and the general public. Without your help we will not be in a position to move forward with this important project. Please take this opportunity to consider supporting us in our efforts to remove some of the many barriers we face on a day-to-day basis.

We sincerely thank you for your support, and we hope you find comfort in the knowledge that you have helped many blind, deafblind and partially sighted Canadians to reach their goals, by allowing us to redesign and rebuild a more accessible and inclusive website, which will remove barriers to equality. Remember, we all have abilities, and we need to be afforded the opportunity to participate on a level playing field so we can all be included.
