Call for Speakers and Panelists: Fifth Annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities Virtual Event on December 5, 2020

As President of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) Toronto Chapter, I would like to invite you to speak at our International Day of Persons with Disabilities event from 1 pm - 4 pm E.S.T. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this virtual conference is opening up the floor for candidate submissions from across Canada! We are seeking speakers and/or panelists to address the challenges persons with disabilities face, particularly youth, amidst the current times we now find ourselves.

Theme

This year’s theme is “Together One Voice, More Choices - Don’t Leave Us Behind”. If you have been frustrated or frightened at the way the disability community has been disproportionately left behind during the pandemic, then this Call is for you!

Who we are

For the past 5 years, we come together to commemorate and celebrate International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Our goal is to foster and strengthen collaboration and support for each other, and to share our successes and challenges so that we can learn about and participate in programs and services designed for persons with disabilities.

Questions to consider

  • What are some best practices that are working well and what are community organizations doing to keep their members engaged during the pandemic?

  • How are the governments and social structures supporting the rights of people with disabilities and what steps can be taken to protect their rights?

  • How do we as people with disabilities respond to these challenges in a time of crisis?

  • How do we attract the voice of the youth and get them more involved with the disability community?

Application Process

Speakers will have a 15-minute speaking session and 15 minutes responding to questions from the audience. Panelists will speak for 10 minutes during the panel discussion. Interested candidates can submit their proposals in writing via email at aebctoronto@gmail.com. An optional request for a two-minute audio or video recording of your presentation would also be welcomed.

Please include your name, contact information, and brief description of your topic in the body of your email. Also include your preference as either a speaker or panelist.

Key Dates

Our call for speakers and panelists will be open until November 10. Speaker selection will be announced by November 21.

Baker McKenzie, Balance for Blind Adults, Canadian Council of the Blind Toronto Visionaries, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Jobstart, Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy and Trailblazers Tandem Cycling Club.

Your participation in this event would be appreciated and I hope to secure your presence at this early date. Thank you for your consideration in joining us.

Sincerely, Minette Samaroo, President, AEBC Toronto Chapter
