RE:         Extension of Funding of the Disability component of the Social Development Partnerships Program

Dear Minister:

The Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) wishes to commend you and your Government for extending funding under the Disability component of the Social Development Partnerships Program. This funding has been of critical importance to many organizations in the disability community for many years, and has helped our community to remove some of the old barriers that have prevented us from achieving the 1981 stated goal of the International Year of the Disabled Person "full participation and equality." Today, that funding remains important as our community continues to work towards the removal of those old barriers, but at the same time to prevent the introduction of new ones.

Since the Program's inception, the size and work of the Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) has grown considerably and today, we believe that we are one of the leading national organizations in the disability field in Canada. We have managed to sustain our growth in size and scope without the help of ongoing government assistance.  However, as you can readily understand, it is difficult if not impossible to continue without attracting new resources to our work.

Over the past several years our organization has repeatedly been told that once a review of the Program is completed, consideration will be given to opening it up for applications from organizations such as the AEBC that do not currently receive funding. With this extension in place, we are writing to inquire when we might expect it to be opened up for applications from organizations such as ours? The AEBC is not the only organization interested in this information, but we feel that consumer organizations such as ours should be given due consideration for whatever limited new funding that might become available.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss our concerns directly with you and your officials. I will be in Ottawa during the first week of February and may be reached before this at (416) 491-7711, or by email at djodhan@blindcanadians.ca.

Yours sincerely,

Donna J. Jodhan
