Congratulatory Correspondence to CNIB for obtaining Funding and Inquiry about Upcoming Provincial Meeting

The follow e-mail was sent to John Rafferty

Dear John:

I would like to congratulate you and the CNIB on your recent success at obtaining $3 million for the continuation of your library initiatives.  The AEBC however does have a few questions and it is our hope that you would be able to clarify for us at your earliest convenience.

1. We see that the federal government is announcing $3 million
in funding to CNIB for the establishment of a digital hub.  I am sure that
we will receive more details in due course.  Preliminarily, however, are
you able to advise as to the nature and scope of this funding?  Is it
intended to set up the new NGO/organization that will administer the hub,and begin preparations to transfer CNIB assets to the new entity, or
something else altogether?

2. I have been informed that on April 25, there is going to be a provincial meeting that would include other organizations of the blind pertaining to the Ontario provincial library campaign to contact MPPs  and I am wondering if the AEBC should expect to receive an invitation to this event?  The AEBC was contacted about this campaign in the fall of 2011 and letters from Marc Workman were circulated to our members asking for our help to support this campaign.

As you may know, when I became president of the AEBC in 2011, one of the priorities for me was to do all that I could to build bridges and break down barriers between the CNIB and the AEBC.  One of the first things that AEBC did to show its commitment was to have held a town hall meeting in October 2011 and this was probably the only one of its kind that was held to discuss the state of library services in Canada.  In addition, AEBC has worked extremely diligently over the last few years to support the CNIB in its efforts to obtain more funding for its library initiatives.

We have written several letters to the Federal Government and to LAC asking for responses to our questions and I personally spent many hours giving input to Lori Sutej on various aspects of the enhancement and development of library services.

If AEBC has not been invited to this press conference due to an oversight then I would understand but if the reason is different then I respectfully ask for an explanation.

I shall look forward to your earliest response.

Yours sincerely,
Donna J. Jodhan
