Vision Assistive Technology and Community Support Exhibition 2016

Montreal, Quebec – April 26, 2016 – Alliance for Equality of Blind Canadians (AEBC) will host the Vision Assistive Technology and Community Support Exhibition 2016, bringing together service providers in the areas of access, technology, inclusion, independent living, and caregiving; people affected by vision loss along with their families; and consumers seeking information about service providers and products.

The exhibition and presentations are free and open to the public.

Where: Best Western Montreal Downtown Hotel Europa (1240 Drummond Street, Montréal)
When: Friday, April 29th – 9AM to 5PM
Who should attend: Teachers, students, caregivers, professionals and anyone experiencing vision loss.

Workshops and Presentations (Incognita Room, Mezzanine Level)

  • 9:00AM: The University of Montreal’s School of Optometry will outline the key elements that the VRT professionals need to acquire to work in the field in Quebec, Canada, and the United States (by Anne Jarry).
  • 10:15AM: Quebec Accessible will provide a historic overview of Quebec's disability rights movement and legislation (by Melanie Benard and Laurence Parent).
  • 11:15AM: Building Information Bridges, advocate and former ACB President Paul Edwards will address gaps in access to information.
  • 12:30PM: Peter Armstrong, Accessible Media Inc.’s Manager of Digital Content, will be unveiling the new fully accessible AMI.ca and AMItele.ca websites. Please register for lunch and learn with Janis Davidson Pressick at Janis.DavidsonPressick@ami.ca
  • 2:00PM: Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission will provide an update on CRTC activities and answer questions with respect to communication service (by Nanao Kachi).
  • 3:15PM: The Canadian Human Rights Commission will discuss an ongoing review of the CHRC complaints process and changes to how the CHRC is engaging and collaborating with stakeholders (by Marie-Claude Landry and Ian Fine).
  • 4:15PM: Panel discussion on Strategies and Apps to Connect with Social Media (by Leo Bissonnette, Michael Ciarciello, Brian Moore, and Jeffery Stark).

A pilot project sponsored by MD Support will install the LowViz indoor navigation throughout the hotel at no cost for the duration of the conference.
