President's Message

Hooray! NFB: AE brings to you the very first edition of the Canadian Blind Monitor produced solely by NFB: AE's employees and volunteers. This issue also represents the first time that NFB: AE has dedicated an issue of this magazine to the education of people who are blind, vision-impaired or deaf blind. The editorial staff has assembled a series of thought provoking articles produced by NFB: AE members who are currently receiving their education at post-secondary institutions, teachers of the visually impaired, blind and deaf blind adults and parents of blind and vision-impaired children. As you read through this issue of the magazine, you will notice that a number of new NFB: AE members have contributed articles for the first time. I would like to thank all of the contributors who have submitted articles since it would be impossible to produce such a high quality magazine without your support. There have been a number of exciting initiatives which NFB: AE has undertaken in the past several months. While you will read about some of them in this issue, others are still ongoing. One of our most important initiatives is in the area of membership recruitment. In July of 2000, NFB: AE started a membership recruitment campaign which involved members of NFB: AE pledging financial support to the organization for every new member who joins the organization from July, 2000 to December 15, 2000. This initiative has in part lead to membership recruitment meetings being held in Edmonton and Toronto in October 2000. Further membership recruitment meetings are planned to take place early in the new year. The second important initiative that NFB: AE has undertaken in the area of membership recruitment is the creation of the NFB: AE's Greater Montreal Chapter. This chapter was officially formed on October 28, 2000. The chapter consists of a seven person executive and eighteen additional members. Thanks to everyone involved in the formation of the Greater Montreal Chapter for their contributions to NFB: AE to date. In closing, I would like to thank the editorial staff and others who have contributed so much to this issue. After reading this publication from cover to cover, I believe that this is the best issue of the Canadian Blind Monitor yet. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have.
