Smart Bus Shelters Talk to Passengers

Editor's Note: Editor's Note: The following article is re-printed from the Daily Post (Liverpool), August 16, 2002

BLIND and partially-sighted passengers will know when the next bus is due - thanks to a talking shelter. They will be able to ask for information on the next bus by pressing a special electronic keyring activator.

A unit fitted to Smart bus shelters will tell them how long they will have to wait. Under Merseytravel's pounds 4m scheme, each shelter is linked by satellite to Merseyside's bus fleet as part of the European cashfunded scheme.

Mark Dowd, Merseytravel chairman, said: "Merseysiders are renowned for THEIR VOCAL talents so it is only right that our bus shelters should talk too."
