Central Okanagan Chapter

The Central Okanagan Chapter of the NFB:AE or the Kelowna Chapter, as it is most commonly known, is one of the original chapters. Many of the founding members of the NFB:AE hail from this Chapter--members such as Alan Neville, Ken Westlake and Rick Oakes, just to name a few.

This Chapter is small in size with eight members, but is always big in ideas and looking for innovative ways to reach out into the community, to let it know who we are and what we do.

At our regular Chapter meetings, we plan fund raising and awareness events and discuss issues. We get together for annual summer gatherings, either a picnic or trip on a houseboat on Lake Okanagan, and our traditional Christmas dinner. These events tend to bring out non-members in the community who are blind or partially sighted and our families as well.

Chapter Events

The Central Okanagan Chapter is having a great year!

  • This year we were able to send six of our members to the annual general meeting (AGM) in Saskatoon.

  • We are launching a new educational/ awareness campaign by means of an essay contest called "What If?" All Okanagan University College students are encouraged to write an essay with their perceptions or thoughts of what it would be like if they were to lose their vision. How would this affect their education, career goals and their daily lives? The essays will be judged by three NFB:AE members from across Canada. Students will earn prizes, and the top essay will be submitted to the Canadian Blind Monitor for publication.

  • One of our members, with Chapter support and encouragement, entered a painting into the "Insight 2004" Art contest in Louisville, Kentucky. We hope to hear how he fared by September.

  • We are so good at putting on garage sales that we are putting on two this year! Funds will go to support the essay contest, our annual events and getting members to the AGM next year in Ottawa. We are also getting "crafty?, with two new ideas of handmaking scarves--silk and those fuzzy wool scarves that are such the rave! We are taking orders for Christmas!!! $20 for the silk scarf and $25 for the wool?shipping included!
