The Person Within

The BC Institute Against Family Violence has recently released a video and handbook package entitled The Person Within: Preventing Abuse of Children and Young People With Disabilities.

The project was developed, written and spearheaded by Dr. Sally Rogow, founder, Professor and Professor Emeritus of UBC's unique Vision Teacher Program in UBC's Faculty of Education. The program prepares itinerant and Teacher Specialists of vision impaired and blind students in the regular classroom.

The 30-minute video features eight persons with various disabilities who were emotionally abused due to mis-diagnosis, warehousing, institutionalisation and neglect. Commentary on the subject is by Sally Rogow, Dick Sobsey and a host of other experts on disability and abuse. There is an accompanying handbook. This educational package is for special educators, parents, caregivers, counsellors, anyone working with persons with disabilities and disabled persons themselves.

The video/handbook package is $50.00. To order copies or for more information on workshops, please contact: Tracey Morapito, Project Co-ordinator, BC Institute Against Family Violence,
