    • Workshop Presentation: Off-The-Shelf Accessibility: Smartphones, Computers, and Universal Design:
Technologies that incorporate principles of universal design set the standard for accessibility and enable users with diverse needs to access information in ways that were virtually impossible before. From smartphones and tablets that provide access to thousands of apps that can aid every aspect of daily living, to built-in features on computers which enhance visibility for those with low vision, this panel presentation aims to provide those in attendance with an overview of several off-the-shelf technologies and freely available adapted software.

In particular, accessibility enhancements (such as speech synthesis, braille connectivity and magnification) and key applications used on the iPhone, Android devices, PC, and the Mac will be highlighted. In addition to an overview of the specific devices and some of the features they provide, the workshop will incorporate a hands-on demonstration and an opportunity for interested attendees to explore the tools for themselves.

    • Workshop presentation moderated by Sharlyn Ayotte: Knowledge Is Power - Shifting the Digital Mindset. Are those without sight out of sight? by David Best.
We are crossing a new frontier in the evolution of computing and entering the era of cognitive systems. scientists and engineers around the world are pushing the boundaries of science and technology to create machines that sense, learn, reason, and interact with people in new ways to provide insight and advice.

A paradigm shift in society, driven by miniaturization, cloud sourcing, and wireless mobile devices, is placing greater power in the hands of consumers. However, the ability to use new emerging technologies is currently at the heart of social inclusion, with those excluded being left out of many work, entertainment, communication, healthcare and social benefits.

  • 2:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Fund Raising: A Brainstorming Discussion Starter moderated by Leo Bissonnette
As the AEBC Strategic Planning Committee and the National Board moves forward to plan for the next year and beyond, we want to hold a discussion starting a brainstorming conversation where we hear from members about fund raising and partnering possibilities. Some of you may have ideas and can offer concrete suggestions. Others may be inspired to help with grant writing. At the chapter level, maybe there are projects that they can take on. Partnering opportunities may lead us to colleges and universities as partners. All of the above are possibilities and we invite you to join us for such a discussion…. Let’s move forward together!

  • 3 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. Coffee Break.
  • 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Proposals / Resolutions by Brian Moore.

  • 9:10 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. Building People Bridges by Special Guest, Paul Edwards. Any organization involving people has potential problems. Egos get in the way and it is really easy to lose sight of the goals and focus on everything we don't like about those we work within the organization. How can we build people bridges and make sure they stay up even during stormy weather? We will use some role playing and some frank reality checks to see if we can make our organization more caring, inclusive and welcoming! We are the power that makes AEBC run! Let's harness that power!
