NEWS FROM NATIONAL
AEBC at the Canadian Telecom Summit by Marcia Yale
I was honoured to recently attend the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto representing AEBC. At the event, I participated on a panel discussion entitled, “Approaching Innovation and Accessibility in Telecommunications.” The panel featured Stephanie Cadieux (Canada’s Chief Accessibility Officer) as Moderator, and on the panel along with me was Adam Balkovec (CRTC Senior Legal Counsel), Harry Lew (Neil Squire Society) and Michael Gottheil (Chief Accessibility Commissioner). Report on the National Air Accessibility Summit by Lee Pigeau
AEBC has been working hard to ensure that blind and partially sighted travellers have a great experience “from curb to cloud” when travelling in Canada by air. I attended the Air Accessibility Summit in late April, and recently, Dean Steacy, the Chair of our Advocacy Committee, had a personal follow-up meeting with Todd Peterson, the Director of Regulatory Affairs at WestJet. Governance Committee
The Governance Committee is working its way through updating and developing new policies. We are also finalizing a National Board Terms of Reference which outlines the roles and responsibilities of the National Board as a whole and those of individual Board members. This document will better prepare those who wish to run for National Board positions at the 2024 AGM.
AGM/Symposium Committee
The AGM/Symposium Committee is on track with plans for the AEBC 2024 AGM to be held at the River Rock Hotel/Casino in Richmond, British Columbia. The hybrid meeting will be held on Sunday September 22, 2024 starting at 10:00 Pacific, 1:00 Eastern. Official notice will be sent out in the next few days. The AGM will be followed by a hybrid Leadership Symposium on Monday September 23 for National Board members and Chapter/Affiliate Presidents.

On the fun side, many of us are enjoying wonderful entertainment provided by our own members from time to time, thanks to Ryan Fleury’s passion for music. Depending on the availability of performers, Ryan organizes a program usually on a weekend day, guaranteed to provide a relaxing and joyful atmosphere. (No stress in this room.) Our next musical event will be on July 21st at 3 pm PT with performers John Lyon and Sue MacAndrew. Zoom details below or remember to look for details on how to connect with us in the Monday Morsels or ask a BC Affiliate member. This is an open invitation to members and friends, the more the merrier. If you have musical talent, maybe you’d like to be included in the lineup? Performers are not necessarily limited to AEBC members.

As part of our campaign, we recently combed through many historical documents to compile a complete list of activities, achievements and milestones. AEBC has worked incredibly hard over the past 32 years, and we are excited to celebrate all of the amazing work and people involved on a new webpage called History & Achievements. We highlighted some of this information in our fundraising campaign, but we hope you will also enjoy reading through the full information on our website page here:
